In today’s society, many people have tattoos. The act of getting a tattoo seems to be a sort of right of passage for many young people, and more and more people are getting tattoos. Whether it be a small tattoo in an inconspicuous location or a large and bizarre portrait on the outside of your arm, there may be tattoos on your body that you no loner want. While tattoos are mostly permanent, they can be removed under certain circumstances. Many people simply got their tattoos when they were too young to truly appreciate the permanence of the art. If you are in this situation, there is no need to worry. You have a few options to consider when you are looking to get rid of your ink.

Many people may wonder, how are tattoos removed? The most common form of tattoo removal is through the use of lasers by a trained professional. Laser removal of a tattoo is often nearly painless, as the doctor administering the laser treatment will more than likely apply a local anesthetic gel to the area before the procedure begins. Then, the doctor will focus high powered laser light on the tattoo to break up its pigment and eventually dissolve it. This form of tattoo removal is extremely effective considering that the procedure is not very invasive. The draw back to laser tattoo removal is that it is not immediate and instantaneously effective. People who choose laser treatments will more than likely have to return for several visits before the tattoo is gone for good.

A more extreme and invasive form of tattoo removal is through surgery. A surgeon can remove the entire piece of skin that the tattoo was placed on, sewing the nearby skin back together to ensure that it heals without the tattooed portion. This option also requires a visit to the doctors, but once your skin is removed the tattoo is gone forever. This process is extremely invasive, though, as your doctor would be performing an actual surgical procedure on you. This option may be best for people with small tattoos in areas such as the ankle or foot. Removing a dime-sized image of a heart from your ankle may be best achieved through surgical removal of the skin.

At Home

There are at home treatments on the market for tattoo removal. Be extremely cautious when considering this option. While it is more convenient to apply a cream onto your tattoo at home, these creams often have little or no effect on the tattoo and they can cause discoloration or scarring that may be permanent.

When considering which is best for you, keep in mind the cost, frequency, and location of treatment. Your specific tattoo be most easily removed in a way you did not realize before! For more information on where to get a tattoo removed go to the resource box.
