Shanghai Kate Hellenbrand, tattoo veteran of over 35 years, is Pain Magazine's Shop of the Month for August; and, for the first two weeks of her reign, she'll be slinging ink at 1008 Main Street (at Junction) in Sturgis, South Dakota, at the massive Motorcycle Rally. “I'm thrilled to be the Shop of the Month, it's a great honor, but I'm also thrilled to be at Sturgis. It's a once-in-a-lifetime event and my first time,” says Hellenbrand.
Pain Magazine, an industry insider’s publication, focuses on the more serious aspects of tattooing and piercing such as sterilization, business practices and legislation. Published in New Mexico and distributed throughout the country through newsstand sales and subscriptions, Pain informs rather than titillates.
Hellenbrand began tattooing in 1971 and has survived with one of the strongest resumes of any other tattoo artist, male or female. She has studied all styles of tattooing: tribal, portraiture, photorealistic, Old School (popularized by her mentor Sailor Jerry Collins of Hawaii), bold line, fine line. A great love has been the study of Japanese mythology.
“I've been very lucky in my career,” says Kate. “I've been able to work as 'one of the boys' alongside the best in the business: Jack Rudy, Ed Hardy, Zeke Owen, Bill Funk. This is a political business because of two big elements: turf and cash,” says Hellenbrand. “Thankfully, I've been able to navigate the slippery slope of personalities and histories in order to remain friends with nearly everyone.”
Her upcoming schedule of invitations is proof: working at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally (Aug. 3rd to 13th); the Body Art Expo in San Francisco’s Cow Palace (Aug 24th to Aug. 28th) and as a Judge at the 1st Annual Physical Grafitti Tour event in Las Vegas (Sept 15th to Sept. 18th). It’s ironic that she’ll be traveling away from her homebase in Buffalo while she’s enjoying the “Shop of the Month” spotlight.
Kate has appeared on the “Today Show”, the “Tonight Show” and many news programs. Her clients include: Howard Stern and members of the rock group Pearl Jam as well as other musicians, actors and celebrities. She has authored two best-selling books of tattoo designs (“Sailor Jerry Acetate Tattoo Stencils”); she was Sailor Jerry’s last apprentice and purchased his estate upon his death in 1973 and has reproduced his original manuscript (“His Book”) in book form.
You can find Kate at 1008 Main Street (at Junction) in Sturgis, August 3rd through the 13th. She will be working 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on a first-come, first-serve basis. Bring your own design or choose from one of hers or she'll be able to draw your project for you.
